April 18th to May 26th

Artist Reception: Thursday, April 28th 6-8pm, Brief artist talk at 7pm

Paintings by local Huntington Woods artist, Marci Bykat, will be on exhibit at the Woods Gallery from April 18th to May 26th. Two series are featured.

“Flowers for Ricky,” honors the gift from her gardener Dad, to notice “the ephemeral beauty of nature.” “Though flowers are gifts in times of happiness and celebration, they are also gifts in times of condolence as well,” writes Marci in her artist’s statement. “Connecting to nature through painting became a comfort over the years as I found that nature has rhythms of patterns which are constant and predictable. Painting these rhythms, even just searching for them with my eyes, for me, organized a complicated world. I search for the rhythms of nature everywhere I go; in the lake’s tidewaters, on the sides of highways with winter foliage of dried wheat and grass, in skies filled with clouds or clustered stars, and of course in my garden filled with flowers.“

“Still Talking” series reflects her interests in both the arts and Jewish Studies.

About “Still Talking,“ she writes; “By using my self-portrait and/or graffiti styled words and numbers (years), I am standing in as both victim and empowered protester, while also using the style that hate is often displayed (graffiti) to be the source of my convictions. I gaze back at the viewer to confront the uneducated beliefs that enough time has passed, and we should just stop talking about the Holocaust and move on. I hope to engage viewers with this question: Is there ever a time to stop talking about genocide, racism, and hate crime? If the answer is no, will you make sure to ‘still talk’ to help educate others?

In keeping with her strong interest and concerns for the environment, many of Marci’s paintings are made on reused and repurposed canvases.

Join us on April 28th for the Artist Reception from 6-8 pm, and get a chance to learn more about Marci’s paintings. There will be a brief gallery talk at 7 pm during the reception. It is intended as an adult reception, but all are welcome.

The Woods Gallery is located in the lower level of the Huntington Woods Library at 26415 Scotia Rd, Huntington Woods, MI. Hours are consistent with regular library hours, except when events/activities are taking place. Note: the library will be closed April 16 th and 17 th for the holidays.
