Artist Statement
While visiting Mexico as a teenager, I was intrigued by the art of the local glass blowers and inspired by the energy, the color, and the malleability of hot glass. A few years later I enrolled in blown glass and stained glass classes and have continued to work with glass as an artistic medium for the past 40 years.
My jewelry and sculpture technique has evolved around the use of glass and metal. Combinations of copper, brass, silver, and gold with fused glass jewels that I have pre-made, (and or) cold glass parts are used to fabricate my pieces. Once a design is conceived, its metal parts are cut out of various sheet metals and soldered together. Next, the glass jewels or cold glass parts are bezel set or copper wrapped and soldered to the metal. To complete the process, each piece is cleaned, buffed, polished, and lacquered.
For my mixed media work, I use layers of kiln worked glass over acrylic (and or) oil painted on canvas backgrounds to create three dimensional scenes. I am inspired in all of my work by nature, life experiences, and abstract design.
