May 6th – June 29th

Artists’ Reception: Thursday, May 18 th

6:00 – 8:00 pm

The Woods Gallery will exhibit the work of 3 Cass Corridor veteran artists, working in 3 mediums from May 6th thru June 29th. Jim Stafford, Amelia Currier, and Margaret McGuinness exhibit free standing and wall hung sculpture, ink gestures on paper, and collage/assemblage with sewn elements. From colorful collages to subtly colored wood, hard edged metal and burnt edged sculpture, this exhibit is a wonderful opportunity to view the works of these 3 experienced artists.

James Stafford has spent the majority of his life in Detroit. He received his BFA in Sculpture at the Center for Creative Studies and worked at General Motors for thirty years as a sculptor. He presently maintains a studio converted from a barn, in rural Michigan, and is exhibiting some of his recent fiberglass sculptures related to Norse cosmology, as well as some earlier work.

Amelia Currier is a printmaker, painter and sculptor. The Woods Gallery exhibit features her wood assemblages and her ‘ink gesture’ series.  About the assemblage sculpture series – she says ‘Wood is the perfect material to embrace and condense the ‘stream of time’, as it is heavy with its own history. The wood assemblages are comprised of found objects, cedar charred in the Japanese shousugiban method, and barn wood.  “By carving a universal form, I can tap into the pre-linguistic world and the true silence that once existed.” Her ink gestures are created using the ancient Zen meditative practice known as Hitsuzendō, ‘the way of the brush’. For her, the experience of creating a gesture is both liberating and enlightening. It is her intention that by embracing the alive, intimate and immediate act of painting, she can give the viewer a moment of transience.

Margaret McGuinness lives and works in the Detroit Metropolitan area and attended Wayne State University, in the Cass Corridor, where she earned a BFA and an MFA in printmaking. Her current body of work explores Mixed-Media Collage, utilizing found objects, rust dyes, designer wallpapers and marbled papers, and dried leaves and flowers on BFK printmaking papers. She is always creating something, and continues to meet her friends from the Cass Corridor, to share ideas, stories, and always looking and thinking about what the future holds.

The artist reception, May 18th, is an excellent time to learn more about these artists and their work. Although intended as an adult reception, all are welcome. The Woods Gallery is located in the lower level of the Huntington Woods Library and is open during library hours.
